Joseph C. Lincoln

a.k.a. Joseph Crosby Lincoln

Author Code: AJCL

Born: Feb. 13, 1870 - Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Mar. 10, 1944 - Winter Park, Florida, USA

Educated in Boston, Lincoln worked in banking and accountancy before beginning art study under the well-known illustrator, Henry Sandham. After some time living the Bohemian life of an artist, Lincoln began writing poetry, much of which dwelt on the life of Cape Cod for which he had fond childhood memories. He moved to New York in 1898 and published his first novel, Cap'n Eri, in 1899. The book was a success and Lincoln never looked back. His next novel, Mr. Pratt (1906), was an even greater success and he moved to Hackensack, New Jersey, where he had purchased a large estate. Over the years Lincoln contributed stories to the Saturday Evening Post, Harper's Weekly and other influential periodicals. In 1902, he published Cap Cod Ballads, a highly successful book of poetry. He went on to produce over 40 novels and was one of America's most successful writers of the early 20th century. His other works include Cape Cod Stories (1907), Cy Whittaker's Place (1908), Our Village (1909), The Rise of Roscoe Paine (1912), Fair Harbor (1922), The Aristocratic Miss Brewster (1927), Silas Bradford's Boy (1928), All Alongshore (1931), Storm Girl (1937), Out of the Fog (1941) and The Bradshaws of Harniss (1943).
