Hannah More

Author Code: EHMR

Born: Feb. 2, 1745 - Fishponds, Gloucestershire, England

Died: Sep. 7, 1833 - Clifton, Avon, England

The daughter of a schoolmaster, More was educated at her elder sister's school in Bristol. She became a teacher at the school and, when seventeen, wrote her first play, The Search After Happiness, for a performance by the girls of the school. She became involved with the Theatre Royal in Bristol and became convinced that writing would be her career. She travelled to London and met many notables of the day including David Garrick, with whom she developed a professional relationship, Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke and Elizabeth Montagu. In 1777, her play, Percy, made its debut at the Covent Garden Theatre. Gradually, she moved away from the theatre and turned to religious writing and, through her friendship with Wilberforce, the abolitionist movement. In 1788, she published Slavery, A Poem, which greatly influenced public awareness of the issue. Throughout the 1790's, she was closely involved with the Clapham Sect, an evangelical Christian group that was fervently anti-slavery. In 1809, she published her only novel, Coelebs In Search of a Wife, for which she is best remembered today. Her other works include Essays on Various Subjects (1777), The Fatal Falsehood (1779), Sacred Dramas (1782), Poems, On Several Occasions (1785), Strictures on Female Education (1799), Hints Towards Forming the Character of a Young Princess (1805), Christian Morals (1813) and Moral Sketches (1819).
