Alexander Gretchaninoff

a.k.a. Alexander Tikhonovich Gretchaninoff

Author Code: RATG

Born: Oct. 13, 1864 - Moscow, Russia

Died: Jan. 3, 1956 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at the Moscow Conservatoire, Gretchaninoff studied under Arensky and Taneyev. He moved to St. Petersburg and studied composition and orchestration under Rimsky-Korsakov, with whom he became life-long friends, until 1893. In 1896, he returned to Moscow and composed for the theatre, opera and the church and was very successful. In 1910, he was awarded an annual pension by the Tsar. In 1925, he emigrated to France where he remained until 1939, when he travelled to the United States. He eventually became an American citizen. He wrote five symphonies, four string quartets, numerous sonatas, several operas and other pieces. As a transitional composer, his work spanned the romanticism of the late 19th century and the modernistic trend of the early 20th century.
