Winston S. Churchill

a.k.a. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, Sir Winston Churchill

Author Code: EWSC

Born: Nov. 30, 1874 - Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England

Died: Jan. 24, 1965 - London, England

Educated at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, Churchill served as a subaltern and war correspondent from 1895 to 1899 in Cuba, India and in South Africa during the Boer War. In 1900, he was elected to Parliament as a Conservative MP. In 1904, he broke with the Conservatives, joined the Liberal party and two years later became the undersecretary of state for the colonies. In 1908, he became the president of the Board of Trade in the Liberal cabinet, and was subsequently appointed home secretary. In 1911, he transferred to the Admiralty where he worked on strengthening the British Navy. Having promoted the ill-fated Dardanelles expedition early in the First World War, he resigned his position and re-entered military service as an officer from 1915 to 1916. He was again elected MP in 1916 and served as minister of munitions (1917-18), secretary of war (1919-1921), head of the Colonial Office (1921-22) and chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-29). As time progressed, Churchill became increasingly more conservative in his politics and re-joined the Conservative party. During the years from 1929 until the outbreak of war in 1939, he was a highly outspoken MP who continually warned of the threat of a growing power in Germany under the Nazis. In 1939, he again joined the Admiralty, but when Germany invaded Holland and Belgium, he became prime minister. As one of the leaders of the Allies, he helped to lead them to ultimate victory over the Axis powers. In a surprise turnaround, Chrurchill and the Conservatives were voted out of power in 1945 when Labour swept the election. He returned as prime minister in 1951, but resigned in 1955 at the age of 81. From 1948 to 1953, he published his six-volume masterpiece The Second World War, which is still considered one of the best on the subject. In addition to his many speeches, including the famous "Iron Curtain" speech, Churchill's many works include River War (1899), Ian Hamilton's March (1900), London to Ladysmith via Pretoria (1900), To Pretoria and Back (1900), Lord Randolph Churchill (1906), My African Journey (1908), Liberalism and the Social Problem (1909), My Early Life (1930), Amid These Storms (1932), The Great War (1933), Marlborough: His Life and Times (1933), Great Contemporaries (1937), Blood, Sweat and Tears (1941), Painting as a Pastime (1948), Their Finest Hour (1949), History of the English-Speaking Peoples (1956), The American Civil War (1961), Frontiers and Wars (1962) and Island Race (1964).
