Pierre Loti *

a.k.a. Louis Marie Julien Viaud

Born: Jan. 14, 1850 - Rochefort, France

Died: Jun. 10, 1923 - Hendaye, France

Viaud studied at the naval school of Brest and entered naval service, where he spent the next 30 years, attaining the rank of captain. It was in the navy that he picked up the nickname of Loti, which he adopted as his pseudonym. He retired in 1910 and concentrated on his writing. In 1876, he published his first work, Aziyade, a semi-biographical romance which would mark many of his future works. His naval career took him around the world and greatly influenced his writing, which has been ackowledged as some of the best descriptive writing of the late 19th century.. In 1891, he was elected to the French Academy. Among his many works are Rarahu (1880), Le Roman d'un spahi (1881), Flowers of Boredom (1882), My Brother Yves (1883), Iceland Fishermen (1886), Madame Chrysantheme (1887), Au Maroc (1890), The Book of Pity and Death (1891), Ramuntcho (1897), Passing Figures and Things (1898), The Last Days of Peking (1902), India: Without the English (1903), La Mort de Philae (1909) and Supremes vision d'Orient (1921).
