Francis Poulenc

Author Code: FFPX

Born: Jan. 7, 1899 - Paris, France

Died: Jan. 30, 1963 - Paris, France

Poulenc was taught piano by his mother, who herself was a gifted pianist. Thereafter, he studied piano under Ricardo Vines and, for a time, also under Auric and Satie. His first composition to be performed was Rapsodie Negre in 1917, which was witnessed and applauded by Stravinsky. He served in the the army during 1918, but continued to compose. His Three Perepetual Movements from that year became a huge success throughout Europe. In 1921, he composed the Promenades for Anton Rubenstein. During the 1920's, 30's and 40's, Poulenc continued to compose pieces which were critically acclaimed by his contemporaries. In 1957, his opera, Les Dialogues des Carmelites made its debut at La Scala and today remains his best-known work. Poulenc produced three operas, numerous concerti for keyboard, choral works, masses and a large amount of chamber music.
