Jan Struther *

a.k.a. Joyce Anstruther, Joyce Maxtone Graham, Joyce Placzek

Author Code: EJST

Born: Jun. 6, 1901 - Belgravia, London, England

Died: Jul. 20, 1953 - New York City, New York, USA

From an upper-class family which included her maternal grandfather Lord Sudeley, Struther was privately educated in Buckinghamshire and London, She developed a love of reading at an early age and began writing verse while still a youngster. In 1923, she married Tony Maxtone Graham and for a few years seemed content with married life. In 1931, she published Betsinda Dances and Other Poems and followed in 1932 with Sycamore Square and Other Poems. Although she was a confirmed agnostic, Struther wrote numerous hymns which are still popular today. In 1937, she began contributing a column to the Court page of the Times concerning the character Mrs. Miniver. This was subsequently collected in book form in 1939 and became a best-seller. The subsequent movie starring Walter Pidgeon and Greer Garson made Struther internationally famous. She met Dolf Placzek, an Austrian Jew, and together they travelled to America at the outbreak of the war. She toured America during the next few years and married Placzek shortly after the war. She was also a regular panelist on the radio programme of the 1940's, Information Please!. After her marriage to Placzek, her literary creativity seemed to fade and she died of breast cancer in 1953. Her other works include The Modern Struwwelpeter (1936), Try Anything Once (1938), The Glass-Blower and Other Poems (1940) and A Pocketful of Pebbles (1946).
