Porphyry *

a.k.a. Malchus

Author Code: CPOR

Born: 233 AD - Tyre, Phoenicia (now Lebanon)

Died: 309 AD - Rome, Italy

Educated in Athens under Longinus, Porphyry then went to Rome around 263 where he continued his studies under Plotinus (who also gave him his nickname). He then spent some time in Sicily where he wrote a text on Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy, a work on vegetarianism and a critique of Christian doctrine. He returned to Rome in 282 and worked on editing and publishing Plotinus' Enneads in which he included a biography of Plotinus and which was finished in 301. Porphyry also contributed works on mathematics and mathematicians including Euclid, Nichomachus and Eudemus. He was a prolific writer, but most of his works have been lost, or only survived as fragments. They include Life of Plotinus, Life of Pythagoras, On Abstinence From Eating Food From Animals, Letter to Marcella (his wife), Senteniae, On the Cave of the Nymphs, Against the Christians and On Images, the latter of which gives a detailed description of the mythological gods.
