John William Burgess

Author Code: AJWB

Born: Aug. 26, 1844 - Giles County, Tennessee, USA

Died: Jan. 13, 1931 - Brookline, Massachusetts, USA

After serving in the Union army during the Civil War, Burgess graduated from Amherst in 1867. He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1869, but rather than practice law, he took a teaching position at Knox College. From 1871 to 1873, he studied at various universities in Germany. On his return, he taught history and political science at Amherst. In 1876, he joined Columbia University and became professor of political science and constitutional law, a position he held until 1912. In 1886, he founded the Political Science Quarterly. In 1901, he published The Civil War and the Constitution and, in 1902, followed with Reconstruction and the Constitution. In 1906, he became the Roosevelt-Professor at the University of Berlin. Burgess protested strongly against the encroachment of the federal government upon state and individual rights. His other works include The Middle Period (1897), Political Science and Comparative Constitutional Law (1898), Truth About Germany (1914), The Administration of President Hayes (1916), Recent Changes in American Constitutional Theory (1923) and The Foundation of Political Science (1933 Posthumous).
