Adam Lindsay Gordon

Author Code: OALG

Born: Oct. 19, 1833 - Fayal, Azores

Died: Jun. 24, 1870 - Brighton Beach, Melbourne, Australia

Educated at Cheltenham College, Dumbleton and the Royal Military College at Woolwich, Gordon also spent some time at the Royal Grammar School at Worcester, but his passion for horses and riding far outweighed his scholastic interests. In 1853, his father sent him to South Australia where he joined the mounted police. On his father's death in 1864, Gordon inherited a large sum and invested in race horses. He became the best steeplechase rider in Australia. In 1865, he was elected to the South Australia Parliament, but resigned in 1866. In 1867, he published his collection of verse, Sea Spray and Smoke Drift. Gordon ran into debt from gambling and drinking and an unsuccessful lawsuit and, in despair, committed suicide in 1870. He had, however, managed to complete his last book of poems which was in press at his death. Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes appeared later that year.Today, Gordon is regarded as the national poet of Australia and there is a monument to him at Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, the only Australian to be so honored. His other works include The Feud (1864), Ashtaroth (1867) and To My Sister! (1870 Posthumous).
