Christina Rossetti

a.k.a. Christina Georgina Rossetti

Author Code: ECRS

Born: Dec. 5, 1830 - London, England

Died: Dec. 29, 1894 - London, England

Educated entirely at home, Christina nevertheless was surrounded by a talented family and well-educated and gifted friends. She enjoyed an honorary membership in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through her brother Dante's involvement and became engaged to one of the brethren, James Collinson, in 1848. The engagement was called off when Collinson reverted to Roman Catholicism. Rossetti was a staunch Anglican and denied herself many pleasures during her life in the expectation of heavenly rewards. She was a pretty girl by all accounts and was the model for her brother Dante's painting, The Girlhood of Mary Virgin, when she was 19. Her first poems were printed privately when she was only 12. In 1850, she contributed poems to The Germ a Pre-Raphaelite journal. After her father's death in 1853, she helped her mother to run a school in Somerset, but it failed after only a year. In 1862, she published Goblin Market and Other Poems which established her as a significant force in Victorian poetry. In 1866, she followed with the equally acclaimed The Prince's Progress and Other Poems. Suffering from Graves' disease, a thyroid disorder, for most of her life, Rossetti developed cancer in 1891 and died from it in 1894. Her other works include Commonplace and Other Short Stories (1870), Sing Song. A Nursery Rhyme Book (1872), Seek and Find (1879), A Pageant and Other Poems (1881), Time Flies (1888) and The Face of the Deep (1892).
