Irvin S. Cobb

a.k.a. Irvin Shrewsbury Cobb

Author Code: AISC

Born: Jun. 23, 1876 - Paducah, Kentucky, USA

Died: Mar. 11, 1944 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at William A. Cade's Academy, Cobb was studying law when a family tragedy struck and he was forced to quit school. He took a job as a reporter for the Paducah Evening News and then moved on to the Louisville Evening Post. In 1904, he moved to New York City and covered the Russo-Japanese peace conference for the Evening Sun. Writing about the personalities involved rather than the conference itself, Cobb showed great insight and journalistic flair. His coverage helped him to land a job at Pulitzer's New York and Evening and Sunday World. His first book, Back Home, appeared in 1912 and proved very popular. He followed with Cobb's Anatomy later that year and Cobb's Bill-of-Dare in 1913. Cobb's humorous and witty newspaper column was also a huge success. In his later years he wrote screenplays in Hollywood and even acted in some silent movies where he became a close friend of Will Rogers. Cobb was a prolific writer and produced over 300 short stories and over 60 books in addition to his numerous journalistic articles. His other works include Old Judge Priest (1915), Paths of Glory (1915), Speaking of Operations (1916), Eating in Two or Three Languages (1919), From Place to Place (1920), One-Third Off (1921), Kansas (1924), Alias Ben Alibi (1925), Ladies and Gentlemen (1927), Red Likker (1929), Murder Day by Day (1933), Faith, Hope and Charity (1934) and his autobiography Exit Laughing (1942).
