Kate Chopin

a.k.a. Kate Chopin (nee O'Flaherty)

Author Code: AKOC

Born: Feb. 8, 1850 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Died: Aug. 22, 1904 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Educated at the Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic institution in St. Louis, Kate was a bright student. She graduated in 1868 and in 1870, she married Oscar Chopin, a wealthy cotton grower. They moved to New Orleans where he ran the business and a store. In 1882, Oscar died of a fever and Kate continued to run the businesses. This didn't go very well and in 1884 she returned to St. Louis with her children. After her mother died in 1885, Kate began to write to support her family. She began publishing short stories which were an immediate success. In 1890, she published her first novel, At Fault, which received good reviews. Her masterpiece, The Awakening, appeared in 1899 and caused a tremendous uproar, so much so that Chopin was even denied admission to the St. Louis Fine Art Club because of it. The character of The Awakening was based on the true story of an infamous New Orleans woman who lived in the French Quarter. The reaction to the book had such an impact on Chopin, that she virtually ceased to publish thereafter, a tremendous loss to the literary world. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1904 after collapsing at the World's Fair two days earlier. In addition to her numerous essays, short stories and magazine articles, Chopin's works included Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadia (1897).
