Robert Frost

a.k.a. Robert Lee Frost

Author Code: ARFX

Born: Mar. 26, 1874 - San Francisco, California, USA

Died: Jan. 29, 1963 - Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Educated at Lawrence High School in Massachusetts and Dartmouth College, Frost wrote his first poems in high school. In 1892, he taught school in Lawrence and worked at a variety of odd jobs. He sold his first poem, My Butterfly: An Elegy, in 1894 to the New York Independent. He returned to school in 1897 and studied for two years at Harvard University. In 1900, he purchased a poultry farm in New Hampshire which eventually failed and forced him back into teaching. He taught English at New Hampshire's Pinkerton Academy and the State Normal School at Plymouth. In 1906, he also published two of his best early poems, The Tuft of Flowers and The Trial By Existence. In 1912, he sailed from Boston with his family and settled in Beaconsfield, England. Shortly after his arrival, he published his first book of poetry, A Boy's Will, and the following year North of Boston appeared. While in England Frost became friends with a number of poets, including Ezra Pound and Edward Thomas. He returned to America in 1915 after England entered the war and was met by the success of his works with critical acclaim. He joined the faculty of Amherst College in Massachusetts, a position he would hold until his death, and read his poetry extensively at a variety of institutions. He also taught at the University of Michigan during the 1920's, Harvard University from 1939 to 1943 and Dartmouth College from 1943 to 1949. In 1924, he won his first Pulitzer Prize for New Hampshire and won again in 1928 with West-Running Brook and in 1936 with A Further Range. The 1930's were a tragic time for Frost in that he lost his wife, one of his daughters and his son, who committed suicide in 1940. Another daughter was institutionalized with mental disorders. His work from this period reflected the darkness of his personal life. In 1942, he published A Witness Tree, which contained some of his best work. In 1957, he returned to England and was awarded honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge. Frost has been considered by many, including T. S. Eliot, as the most eminent and distinguished Anglo-American poet of the 20th century. Frost's many other works included Mountain Interval (1916), The Lone Striker (1933), From Snow to Snow (1936), Steeple Bush (1947), Hard Not to Be King (1951) and In The Clearing.
