W. E. Aytoun

a.k.a. William Edmondstoune Aytoun

Author Code: EWEA

Born: Jun. 21, 1813 - Edinburgh, Scotland

Died: Aug. 4, 1865 - Elgin, Moray, Scotland

Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, Aytoun also studied law in London before travelling to Germany to study German and German literature. He returned to Scotland in 1834 and in 1835 became a writer to the Signet (a superior order of solicitors in Scotland). In 1840, he was called to the bar, but his first passion was writing and poetry. In 1832, he had published Poland, Homer and Other Poems, and began contributing to Blackwood's Magazine in 1836. In 1844, he joined the staff of Blackwood's and over the ensuing years became one of their most prolific writers. In 1845, he was appointed professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at the University of Edinburgh and was among the most popular lecturers at the school. In 1849, he published his most important work, Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems, which achieved critical acclaim and became a best-seller. In 1858, he published the two-volume The Ballads of Scotland which was also extremely well-received. After the death of his wife in 1859, Aytoun's loneliness coupled with chronic stomach ailments dramatically affected his output and, although he continued to contribute to Blackwood's, his greatest work lay behind him. Besides a large amount of poetry and some translations, his other works included Bothwell (1856) and the autobiographical novel Norman Sinclair (1861).
