Marcus Tullius Cicero

a.k.a. Cicero

Author Code: CCIC

Born: 106 BC - Arpinum, Italy

Died: 43 BC - Caieta, Rome, Italy

Cicero studied law and philosophy in Greece and Rome and became a lawyer who attained a high reputation in his field. He entered politics sometime after 66 BC and became a consul in 63 BC. He actively opposed the conspiracy of Cataline and was exiled in 58 BC. He was recalled in 57 BC and became governor of Cilicia in 51. After Caesar's assassination in 43 BC, Cicero aligned himself with the republican party in opposition to Marc Anthony, Octavian and Lepidus, the triumvirate. He was captured in 43 BC and put to death. His primary works have survived and the best of these are his orations (which include the Verrines and the Phillipics, the latter being directed against Marc Anthony), De Oratore, a work on rhetoric, De Republica and De Legibus, both dealing with political philosophy, De Natura Deorum, theology and De Officiis, De Senectute and De Amicitia which deal with moral philosophy.
