Elihu Root

Born: Feb. 15, 1845 - Clinton, New York, USA

Died: Feb. 7, 1937 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Hamilton College, where he graduated first in his class in 1864, Root taught school for as year before continuing his studies at the Law School of New York University. After graduation in 1867, he founded a law firm where he rose to prominence as a lawyer over the following thirty years. In 1899, he was appointed Secretary of War by President McKinley and during the next 5 years he established the War College, expanded West Point and opened schools for the various branches of the military. He also constructed plans for Cuban independence and the governance of the Philippines. In 1905, President Roosevelt appointed him Secretary of State and his record over the next 4 years was impressive. From 1909 to 1915 he served as a U.S. Senator and in 1912, he was the winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace. In 1915, he declined the Republican Party nomination for President and instead became the President of the New York State Constitutional Convention. In 1917, President Wilson appointed him ambassador extraordinary to Russia. From 1921-22, he was a delegate to the Washington Naval Conference. Root worked closely with Andrew Carnegie and became the first president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Root is considered to be one of the most eminent and respected of American civil servants.
