Margaret Mitchell

Died: Aug. 16, 1949 - Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Educated at Washington Seminary, Atlanta and Smith College, Massachusetts, Mitchell began her career as a journalist for The Atlanta Journal in 1922. In 1926, she suffered an ankle injury which forced her to resign from the paper. She then began to write her one novel, Gone With The Wind, which was not completed until 1936. In 1937, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The novel, about the American Civil War and the Southern view of Reconstruction, which was made into a film in 1939, was the largest selling novel in US publishing history, selling over one million copies in the first six months.
