Jean Charles Leonard Simonde de Sismondi

a.k.a. J.C.L. Simonde de Sismondi

Author Code: OSDS

Born: May 9, 1773 - Geneva, Switzerland

Died: Jun. 25, 1842 - Geneva, Switzerland

From an upper class family in Geneva, Sismondi was well-educated and began his career in banking in Lyons. Moving to England during he Revolution, the family returned to find that the situation was still problematic and thus sold their property and moved to Italy where Sismondi worked on the family farm. When he finally returned to Geneva in 1801, he published Tableau de l'agriculture Toscani, which was based on his experiences in Tuscany. His interest in political economy led him to publish Trait de la Richesse Commerciale in 1803. Initially a follower of Adam Smith, Sismondi modified his outlook over time to follow a more humanitarian viewpoint. His greatest work, Nouveaux Principes d'oeconomie politique (Political Economy) was published in 1819. In spite of this economic masterpiece, Sismondi was more of an historian than an economist. Among his major historical works were the History of the Italian Republics (1807-1818), The History of France (1818-1841) and the History of the Italian Renaissance (1832). Sismondi also published a novel, Julia Severa, in 1822.
