Edmund Burke

Born: Jan. 12,1729 - Dublin, Ireland

Died: Jul. 9, 1797 - Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England

Educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Middle Temple, Burke published his first works, A Vindication of Natural Society, and A Philosophical Inquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful in 1756. In 1759, he founded the Annual Register and in 1765 he was elected to Parliament as member for Wendover. His first speech in 1766 dealt with the American question. Further publications included Observations on the Present State of the Nation (1769), Thoughts on the Present Discontents (1770) and Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). During the American Revolution, Burke, now as MP for Bristol, delivered a number of speeches in favour of conciliation and criticism on the handling of the war. He left Parliament in 1794 and retired to his estate in Beaconsfield.
