Brother of the actor Otis Skinner, Charles pursued a career in literature and journalism. He was an editor for many years on the Brooklyn Eagle. He authored Villon, the Vagabond and a few other minor dramas for the stage, but is best remembered for his collections of myths, legends and folklore. His best-known works include Myths and Legends of Our Own Land (1896), Nature in a City Yard (1897), With Feet to the Earth (1898), Do-Nothing Days (1899), Myths and Legends Beyond Our Borders (1899), Myths and Legends of Our New Possessions and Protectorates (1900), Workers and the Trusts (1900), Flowers in the Pave (1900). American Communes (1901), American Myths and Legends (1903) and Little Gardens (1904).
