Charles Hamilton Sorley

Author Code: ECHS

Born: May 19, 1895 - Aberdeen, Scotland

Died: Oct. 13, 1915 - Loos, France

The Son of a university professor, Sorley was a gifted youth and received his formal education at Marlborough College. Having won a scholarship to University College, Oxford in 1913, Sorley decided to first visit Germany, staying for a time in Mecklenburg and the University at Jena. When war was declared, he returned to England and joined the Suffolk Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. He went to France in May of 1915 and was promoted to captain in August, 1915. At the Battle of Loos, Sorley was killed by a sniper's bullet. Following his death, his poems were found among his possessions. They were published posthumously in 1916 as Marlborough and Other Poems and were extremely well-received. Robert Graves considered Sorley as one of the best of the First World War poets. He is one of the sixteen war poets commemorated at Westminster Abbey.
