Vachel Lindsay

a.k.a. Nicholas Vachel Lindsay

Author Code: AVLX

Born: Nov. 10, 1879 - Springfield, Illinois, USA

Died: Dec. 5, 1931 - Springfield, Illinois, USA

Lindsay studied medicine at Hiram College in Ohio, but abandoned that in favor of art which he studied in Chicago at The Art Institute. He travelled to New York and continued his studies at the New York School of Art. During his studies, he wrote incessantly, but it wasn't until 1905 that any of his poems appeared in print, albeit self-published. He began a period of intense travel throughout America, mostly on foot, paying his way by reciting his poetry and doing odd jobs. In 1910, back in his home of Springfield, he began publishing The Village Magazine, which brought him some recognition. His first claim to fame came with the publication of General William Booth Enters Into Heaven in 1913. It was an enormous success and was lauded by the critics. In 1914, The Congo and Other Poems was published and the following year, The Chinese Nightengale and Other Poems appeared. The latter won an award in 1915. Suffering from paranoia for many years, Lindsay, after a series of personal and financial problems, committed suicide by drinking Lysol, a household disinfectant. He was a close friend of the poet, Sara Teasdale, who wrote an elegy to him. Other works by Lindsay included The Golden Whales of California and Other Rhymes in the American Language (1920), The Golden Book of Springfield (1920), The Daniel Jazz and Other Poems (1920), Going-to-the-Stars (1926), Johnny Appleseed (1928), Every Soul Is a Circus (1929) and The Litany of Washington Street (1929).
