Willam Cullen Bryant

Author Code: AWCB

Born: Nov. 3, 1794 - Cummington, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Jun. 12, 1878 - New York City, New York, USA

Descended from Puritan immigrants, Bryant attended Williams College, but failed to graduate due to financial constraints. He studied law at Worthington and Bridgewater, receiving private tutoring and was admitted to the bar at the age of 21. Bryant practiced law in both Plainfield and Great Barrington for 10 years. Never really interested in his profession, Bryant moved to New York in 1825 and became co-editor of the New York Review. In 1827, he moved on to become an editor of the Evening Post. By 1829, he was Editor-in-chief and continued in this position until his death.

Bryant's first published poem was The Embargo in 1808 at the age of only 13 years. He is best known for Thanatopsis which he wrote at the age of 17 and which was published in the North American Review in 1817. He continued to publish until his death in 1878, producing hundreds of poems. Bryant was also highly active in politics and was one of the founding fathers of the Republican Party.
