Marcel Proust

a.k.a. Valentin-Louis-Georges-Eugene-Marcel Proust

Author Code: FMPX

Born: Jul. 10, 1871 - Auteuil, France

Died: Nov. 18, 1922 - Paris, France

Proust was educated at the Lycee Condorcet and the Sorbonne at the Ecole des Sciences Politiques, where he studied law. He began his writing career with articles for various periodicals including the Symbolist. Proust worked as a lawyer for a short time and was active in the Dreyfuss affair. On the death of his mother in 1905, Proust became more of a recluse and, being financially independent, began work on his great novel Remembrance of Things Past (A la Recherche du Temps Perdu - literally, In Search of Lost Time) which would occupy him until his death. The first volume, Swann's Way, was published in 1913. Within A Budding Grove (A l'Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleur) followed in 1918 and won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1919. The other volumes are The Guermantes Way (2 Vols - 1920-21) (Le Cotes de Guermantes), Cities of the Plain (2 Vols - 1921-22) (Sodom et Gomorrhe), The Captive (1924 - La Prisonniere), The Fugitive (1925 - post. Albertine Disparue) and finally Time Regained (1927 - post. Le Temps Retrouve). Suffering from asthma since early childhood, the malady was part of the cause of his early death. Other works of note include Portraits de Peintres (1896), Pleasures and Regrets (1896 - Les Plaisirs et les Jours), Pastiches et Melanges (1919) and Jean Santeuil which was unfinished, the manuscript not being discovered until the 1950's. Proust also wrote numerous articles and literary criticism.
