A pastor of the ministry of Bern, Wyss wrote The Swiss Family Robinson, based on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, in order to entertain and educate his children. His eldest son Johann, a professor at the University in Bern, edited and published the manuscript in 1813. Immensely popular, the work has become one of the classics of children's literature.
