A.E. Housman

a.k.a. Alfred Edward Housman

Author Code: EAEH

Born: Mar. 26, 1859 - Fockbury, Worcestershire, England

Died: Apr. 30, 1936 - Cambridge, England

Housman was educated at Oxford, although he did not graduate owing to emotional problems which caused him to fail his finals. He took a job at the Patent Office in London in 1882 where he worked for 10 years, while in his spare time studying Latin texts. His contributions to scholarly journals on Latin resulted in his invitation to the post of professor of Latin at University College, London in 1892. He began to write poetry and published his first collection, A Shropshire Lad, in 1896. His only other published literary work came in 1922 with Last Poems, which was extremely successful. His other major work was of a scholary nature and included an annotated edition of the poet Manilius (published in 5 volumes from 1903 through 1930).
