John McCrae

Author Code: OJMX

Born: Nov. 30, 1872 - Guelph, Ontario, Canada

Died: Jan. 28, 1918 - France

Educated at Guelph College and the University of Toronto, McCrae studied medicine and graduated at the top of his class. McCrae began publishing some of his work, which included both short stories and verse, while he was still at college. He was also an accomplished artist. After graduation, he took a fellowship at McGill University in Montreal. During the Boer War, McCrae saw much action in South Africa in command of an artillery battery. After the war, he held a number of positions including pathologist at the Montreal General Hospital and physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. At the outbreak of World War I, McCrae took the post of Brigade Surgeon and was subsequently in charge of a field dressing station during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. McCrae wrote his famous In Flanders Fields, after performing burial rites on a close friend. The poem was published in Punch the following year. He then took the post of second in command at the Canadian General Hospital in France, where he served until he contracted pneumonia in January, 1918. This was further complicated by meningitis and led to his death. He is buried at Wimereaux Cemetary in France. In Flanders Fields and Other Poems, was published posthumously in 1919.
