Educated at Gray's Inn and University College, Oxford, Smith gave up his legal studies to pursue the classics and took a post at University College. In 1842, he published The Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities and followed this in 1849 with Greek and Roman Biography. The Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography was published in 1857. Smith acted as editor for numerous projects including Gibbon and many ecclesiastical works. He was a member of the Senate of the University of London, registrar of the Royal Literary Fund, editor of the Quarterly Review and was knighted in 1892.
