William Wordsworth

Author Code: EWWX

Born: Apr. 7, 1770 - Cockermouth, Cumberland, England

Died: Apr. 23, 1850 - Grasmere, Westmoreland, England

Wordsworth was educated at Hawkshead school and Cambridge University. In 1790-92 he visited France, Italy and the Alps and produced his first literary output, An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches (1793), on his return to England. He met the poet Coleridge and they became the best of friends, collaborating on Lyrical Ballads (1798). After a short visit to Germany, Wordsworth settled in the Lake district for the remainder of his life. He succeeded Southey as poet laureate in 1843. The majority of Wordsworth's works are poetry, although he did write some prose including A Description of the Scenery of the Lakes in the North of England (1810). His most remembered works include The Prelude (1805 - published posthumously), The White Doe of Rylstone (1807), The Excursion (1814), The Waggoner (1819), the River Duddon Sonnets (1820), the Ecclesiastical Sonnets (1822) and Yarrow Revisited (1835).
