George Bush

a.k.a. George Herbert Walker Bush

Author Code: AGHB

Born: Jun. 12, 1924 - Milton, Massachusetts

Died: - - -

Bush was educated at Andover and Yale University. He served as a naval pilot in World War II and returned to Texas to start a successful oil business. He was elected to Congress twice, was US ambassador to the UN, headed the Republican National Committee, the US Liaison Office in Peking, and finally the CIA. He sought the nomination for Republican candidate for President in 1980, but became Ronald Reagan's running mate instead. After eight years as Vice President, Bush won the Presidency in the 1988 election. During the Bush administration, the Communist grip on the Eastern bloc weakened, Germany united and the Soviet Union disintegrated. The Cold War had ended at last. In 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait, Bush secured UN and world approval for countering this aggression. He built a coalition which culminated in operation "Desert Storm", pushing the Iraqis back and securing a decisive victory. On the home front, however, a weak economy was taking its toll and in 1993 Bush was defeated by Bill Clinton.
