Harry S. Truman

Author Code: AHST

Born: May 8, 1884 - Lamar, Missouri, USA

Died: Dec. 26, 1972 - Kansas City, Missouri, USA

Truman served as an artillery captain during the First World War in France. After the war, he opened a haberdashery in Missouri and attended the Kansas City School of Law. He was appointed judge of Jackson county (1926-34) and thereafter, elected to the US Senate where he served from 1935 to 1944. He achieved national recognition while heading the very effective Senate Committee investigating wartime government expenditures. In 1944 he was the Democratic choice for vice-president and took office when Franklin Roosevelt won his unprecedented 4th term. Truman succeeded to the presidency on the death of Roosevelt in 1945, a very critical period. He attended the Potsdam conference in July, 1945 and again in August, 1945, when Japan had vowed to continue fighting after Germany had surrendered, he authorized the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which brought the war to an end. He initiated the Truman Doctrine in 1947 to curb the spread of Soviet influence and implemented the Marshall Plan for European economic recovery. Soviet relations deteriorated even further when the Russians blockaded Berlin, leading to the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49. Truman won a surprise victory over Thomas Dewey in 1948 and was re-elected. During his administration, known as the Fair Deal, he put through the Housing Act of 1949, initiated various civil rights programs including the desegregation of the armed forces and federally supported schools. In June, 1950, when the communists attacked Korea, he secured United Nations consensus for armed intervention. He declined the nomination in 1952 and retired from office.
