Calvin Coolidge

a.k.a. John Calvin Coolidge

Author Code: AJCC

Born: Jul. 4, 1872 - Plymouth, Vermont, USA

Died: Jan. 5, 1933 - Northampton, Massachusetts, USA

Coolidge graduated from Amherst (1895) and practiced law at Northampton, Massachusetts. He was elected governor in 1919 and during the Boston Police Strike of 1919 used the militia to end the strike and gain national recognition. Warren Harding asked Coolidge to be his running mate in the 1920 election and Coolidge became vice-president. When Harding died two years later, Coolidge was sworn in as President. With the nickname of "Silent Cal", Coolidge was a very low-profile man, but with a reputation for honesty and integrity. He easily won the 1924 election and his slogan was "Keep Cool with Coolidge". During his administration, taxes were reduced, economic measures were introduced in government and business boomed. He did not run for re-election in 1928, but instead backed his Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover.
