Work was employed by the Hudson Bay Company and was sent to Astoria (Fort George) with Peter Skene Ogden in 1823. Until 1830, he was a clerk at various outposts in the Oregon Territory and he supervised the construction of Fort Colvile. In 1830, he became the Chief Trader in charge of the Snake River Brigade. His journal of the years 1824 to 1831 was published posthumously in 1909.
