A Slave from Maryland, Ball is known for his autobiography, The Life and Adventures of Charles Ball (1837). He was sold to a South Carolina planter in 1805 and was forced to leave his wife and children behind. He escaped several times until, free at last, he wrote his autobiography. A variation of his life was published as Fifty Years in Chains in 1858.
