George Moore

a.k.a. George Augustus Moore

Author Code: EGAM

Born: Feb. 24, 1852 - Ballyglass, County Mayo, Ireland

Died: Jan. 21, 1933 - London, England

Moore left his homeland of Ireland when he was 18 and went to France to study painting. He returned to England in 1882 to begin a writing career and published his first novel, A Modern Lover, in 1883, which borrowed much from French literary technique. His best work is Esther Waters (1894), which was a commercial success and was followed by Evelyn Innes (1898) and Sister Teresa (1901). Moore moved to Dublin in 1901 where he assisted in the planning of the Abbey Theatre (Irish National Theatre). He published an excellent collection of short stories in Untilled Field (1903). He also produced a number of autobiographical works with Confessions of a Young Man (1888), Memoirs of My Dead Life (1906) and Hail and Farewell (1911). Moore returned to England in 1911 where he produced The Brook Kerith (1916), Heloise and Abelard (1921) and Ulick and Soracha (1924).
