Alice Gerstenberg

Educated at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, Gerstenberg graduated in 1907 and then spent time in New York studying plays including the works of David Belasco. She returned to Chicago after a short time and concentrated on writing plays, becoming involved with the Little Theatre movement. Her best-known play, Overtones, was produced in 1913 and later performed by the Washington Square Players in 1915. The play had a great influence on subsequent playwrights including Eugene O'Neill. Gerstenberg remained true to her Chicago roots throughout her career and her plays were performed in many regional and little theatres in the Chicago area. She founded the Junior League Children's Theatre in Chicago in 1921 and the Playwright's Theatre the following year. In 1938 she won the Chicago Foundationfor Literature Award in 1938. In addition to her plays, Gerstenbergwrote for radio and produced two novels. Her works include A Small World (1908), The Unquenched Five (1912), The Conscience of Sarah Platt (1915), The Buffer (1916), The Unseen (1918), Ten One-Act Plays (1921), Their Husband (1924), At the Club(1925), Sentience (1933), Within the Hour (1934), Time for Romance (1940) and Time for Living (1969).
