Alfred Duggan

a.k.a. Alfredo Leon Duggan

Author Code: EALD

Born: (?), 1903 - Buenos Aires, Argentina

Died: Apr. 4, 1964 - Ross-on-Wye, Wales

Born in Argentina to Irish parents, Duggan moved to England with his family when he was two. After his father's death in 1915, his mother subsequently married Lord Curzon. Duggan was then educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford. Financially independent because of the fortune left him by his late father, Duggan travelled widely, especially in the Levant. He eventually ran out of money ad spent his time reading, especially medieval history. In 1939, he enlisted in the British Army and was posted to Norway. When war came in 1940, he took part in the retreat which included many hardships that affected his health. He was invalided out of the army and took a job at an airplane factory until the end of the war. He married in 1953 and moved to Herefordshire where he concentrated on his writing. He dealt primarily in history and historical fiction. He was a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh, whom he met at Oxford. His many works include Knight With Armour (1950), Conscience of the King (1951), The Little Emperors (1951), Thomas Becket of Canterbury (1952), Leopards and Lilies (1954), Devil's Brood: The Angevin Family (1957), Three's Company (1958), Growing Up in 13th Century England (1962), Elephants and Castles (1963) and Growing Up With the Norman Conquest (1965 Posthumous).
