E. V. Knox

a.k.a. Edmund George Valpy Knox, Evoe*

Born: May 8, 1881 - Kibworth, Leicestershire, England

Died: Jan. 2, 1971 - Hampstead, London, England

Educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Rugby, Knox came from a talented family whose siblings included authors Ronald Knox and Winifred Peck. He served in the Lincolnshire Regiment in the First World War and was wounded in 1917. His first book of verse, The Brazen Lyre, appeared in 1911. The following year he married Christian Frances Hicks and the couple had two children. He became a staff member of Punch magazine in 1921 and adopted the pseudonym of Evoe. In 1932, he became the editor of Punch, a position he held until his retirement in 1949. Many of his essays, articles and poems from Punch were collected in book form and include Parodies Regained (1921), Fiction As She Is Wrote (1923), Quaint Specimens (1925), Wonderful Outings (1928), This Other Eden (1929), Folly Calling (1932) and In My Old Days (1969).
