a.k.a. Clive Conrad *

Author Code: EFRK

Born: (?), 1892 - Halifax, England

Died: Dec. 3, 1958 - Halifax, England

Educated at Rishworth and Bradford Grammar Schools and Leeds University, where he studied medicine, King qualified as a doctor in 1914. He served in Egypt and the Middle East during the First World War. Following the war he set up a medical practice in Halifax, but he soon turned to writing and published his first novel, Miriam of the Moorland, in 1924. He evolved into a premier author of the macabre and crime genres. His book, The Ghoul (1928), was made into a classic 1933 film starring Boris Karloff. King gave up his medical practice in 1936 and concentrated solely on writing. He was a regular contributor of short stories to leading periodicals such as Illustrated, Detective Fiction Weekly and London Evening News. He died suddenly at his home in Halifax. His many works include Terror at Straups House (1927), The Owl (1930), Night at Krumlin Castle (1932), The House of Sleep (1934), Molly on the Spot (1940), Candidates for Murder (1945), Death of a Halo (1950), Death Changes His Mind (1953), Death Has a Double (1955) and The Two Who Talked (1958).
