T. F. Powys

a.k.a. Theodore Francis Powys

Author Code: ETFP

Born: Dec. 20, 1875 - Shirley, Derbyshire, England

Died: Nov. 27, 1953 - Mappowder, Dorset, England

One of eleven siblings, all of whom were extremely talented, including the novelist John Cowper, novelist and essayist Llewelyn and novelist Phillipa, Powys became a writer of primarily allegorical stories. He was educated at Dorchester Grammar School, but left school when he was 15 to become an apprentice on a Suffolk farm. He married in 1905 and settled in Dorset where he lived the life of a near-recluse until his death. Although he had published an essay, An Interpretation of Genesis,, in 1907, his first true published work Soliloquies of a Hermit, appeared in 1918. His first novel, Black Bryony was published in 1923. He was a deeply religious man, and this comes across in many of his works. The work for which he is best remembered is undoubtedly Mr. Weston's Good Wine (1927). His other works include The Left Leg (1923), Mark Only (1924), Mr. Tasker's Gods (1925), The House With the Echo (1928), Fables (1929), The White Paternoster (1930), The Only Penitent (1931), Unclay (1931), Captain Patch (1935) and Bottle's Path (1946).
