Carlo Emilio Gadda

Author Code: TCEG

Born: Nov. 14, 1893 - Milan, Italy

Died: May 21, 1973 - Rome, Italy

Educated in engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, Gadda's studies were interrupted by the First World War. He volunteered for the army a became a lieutenant in the Alpine Corps. He was captured in 1917 and spent several months in a German POW camp. Following the war, Gadda returned to his studies and graduated in 1920. For the next 15 years, he practised as an engineer. Beginning in the late 1930s, Gadda turned to literature as his full-time profession. Considered a language innovator, Gadda often added elements of various dialects, puns and jargon to his works, which has rendered them difficult to translate. His best work is undoubtedly the crime novel, That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana (1946). Gadda continued to write until his death in 1973. His works include The Fire in Via Keplero (1940), Gli Anni (1943), L'Adalgisa (1944), Novelle dal Ducato in Flamme (1953), I Sogni e la Folgore (1955), Verso la Certosa (1961), Eros e Priapo (1967), La Meccanica (1970) and Novella Seconda (1971).
