Luigi Capuana

Died: Nov. 29, 1915 - Catania, Italy

From a wealthy family in Catania province, Capuana was educated at local schools and at the Royal College of Bronte, Because of poor health he was forced to leave college after two years. Nevertheless, he received a degree after continuing his study by himself. In 1857, he joined the Faculty of Law, but left in 1860 in order to participate in Garibaldi's fight for unification of Italy. He moved to Florence in 1864 and began his literary career. He began publishing criticisms in the Italian Review and, in 1866, became the theatre critic for La Natione. His first novel, Dr. Cymbalus, appeared as a serial in 1867. In 1868, he returned to Sicily and took a position as a school inspector for a number of years, before being elected mayor of Mineo. He moved to Catania in 1902 and lectured at the local university while continuing to publish his works. During his career, Capuana published numerous plays, novels, short stories and poetry. His works include Garibaldi (1861), Giacinta (1879), Semiritmi (1888), Profumo (1892), Contemporary 'Isms' (1898), The Marquis of Roccaverdina (1901), Coscienze (1905), Nel paese di Zagara| (1910), Gli Americani di Rabbato (1912) and The Paranymph (1914).
