Cotton Noe

a.k.a. J.T. Cotton Noe, James Thomas Cotton Noe

Born: May 2, 1864 - Washington County, Kentucky, USA

Died: Nov. 9, 1953 - Beverly Hills, California, USA

Educated at Franklin College in Indiana, Noe received an AB degree in 1887 and then began a teaching career. He was a high school principal in Kentucky and Indiana from 1887 until 1892. He received his master's degree in 1890 and from 1891 to 1892 studied literature at Cornell University. He taught at Williamsburg Institute for a year before beginning the practise of law in Springfield, Kentucky. In 1899, he returned to his studies at the University of Chicago. He then taught in various capacities in Kentucky and Tennessee before becoming assistant professor of education at the University of Kentucky in 1908. In 1912, he became head of the department and retained that position until his retirement in 1934. In 1926 he was named Kentucky's poet laureate. He was a popular lecturer and delivered numerous commencement addresses over the years. He produced eight volumes of verse and compiled an anthology of Kentucky poetry. His work includes The Loom of Life (1912), The Blood of Rachel and Other Poems (1916), Lincoln and Twenty Other Poems (1922), Uplift, a Poetic Fantasy (1926), Tip Sans of Kentucky (1926), The Legend of the Silver Band (1932), The Valley of Parnassus (1935), Oolooloon Fleeting Doe, A Romance of Pioneer Kentucky (1938) and Banquet in Elysium and Other Poems (1951).
