John Gray

Author Code: EJGR

Born: Mar. 2, 1866 - London, England

Died: Jun. 14, 1934 - Edinburgh, Scotland

Gray became an apprentice metal-worker when he was 13 and was primarily educated by attending evening classes, later becoming a civil servant and a librarian for the Foreign Office. During the 1890s he met and became friends with Oscar Wilde, who subsidized his Silverpoints in 1893. He was also close to Aubrey Beardsley and Ernest Dowson. Silverpoints contained sixteen poems and thirteen translations from the French Symbolists Stephan Mallarme, Paul Verlaine, Jules Laforgue and Arthur Rimbaud. He converted to Catholicism in 1890 and in 1898 entered Scots College in Rome to study for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1901 and served in Edinburgh. Twenty years would elapse before he began to publish again. His works include The Blue Calendar (1895-97), Spiritual Poems, Chiefly Done Out of Several Languages (1896), Ad Matrem: Fourteen Scenes in the Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1903), Vivis (1922), The Long Road (1926), Poems (1931) and Park: A Fantastic Story (1932).
