Alonso del Castillo Solorzano

Author Code: SACS

Born: (?) 1584 - Tordesillas, Spain

Died: (?) 1647 - Rome, Italy (?)

Information concerning Solorzano's early life is negligible - he is first heard of in Madrid in 1619 when he was already 35 years old. He found a patron in the Marques del Vellar and produced his first book, Donaires del Parnaso (1625). He wrote plays in addition to short stories and novels and his stories are very reminiscent of the style of the Decameron. In the late 1620s, he joined the household of the marques de los Velez, the Viceroy of Valencia, and produced a number of works over the next decade that established his reputation. He accompanied the Marques to Rome when he fled following a military defeat in Catalonia and is presumed to have died there. His works include Tardes Entrenidas (1625), Jornados alegres (1626), Tiempo de Regozijo, y Carnestolendas de Madrid (1627), Lisardo enamorado (1629), Las Harpias en Madrid (1631), Los amantes andaluzes (1633), Fiestas del Iardin (1634), La Garduna de Sevilla (1642) and Quinta de Laurel (1649 Posthumous).
