Drew Pearson

a.k.a. Andrew Russell Pearson

Author Code: AARP

Born: Dec. 13, 1897 - Evanston, Illinois, USA

Died: Sep. 1, 1969 - Rockville, Maryland, USA

Educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Swarthmore College, Pearson graduated in 1919 and spent some time travelling in Europe before returning to teach industrial geography at the University of Pennsylvania. After three years, he turned to journalism. From 1926 to 1933 he worked for the United States Daily and also for the Baltimore Sun from 1929 to 1932. In 1931, he co-authored Washington Merry-Go-Round with Robert S. Allen. Although this resulted in them both being fired, the book's success led to their invitation to do a syndicated column of the same name, which became very popular. In 1942, the team split up, with Allen deciding to write his own column. Pearson was a strong supporter of Roosevelt and his New Deal. As a writer for the Washington Post in 1943, Pearson was responsible for breaking the story of General Patton's infamous slapping of an enlisted man in a field hospital. Towards the end of the war, Pearson tried his hand at radio and became a very successful broadcaster. He was responsible for many important 'breaking' stories during the decades following the war, including the ultimate indictment of J. Parnell Thomas, Chairman of the House on Un-American Activities Committee, and the leak of MacArthur's cable expressing his disagreements with President Truman's policy in Korea. In spite of being a friend of Senator Joseph McCarthy, Pearson disagreed with the Communist witch-hunts of the early 1950s. He supported Humphrey's campaign in 1960, then Lyndon Johnson and finally Kennedy. In 1969, when Mary Jo Kopechne died in Edward Kennedy's car, Pearson began investigating, only to die of a heart attack two months later. Pearson's works include USA: Second-Class Power (1958), The Senator (1968), The President (1970 Posthumous) and Diaries, 1949-1959 (1974 Posthumous).
