Martha Gellhorn

Author Code: AMGH

Born: Nov. 8, 1908 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Died: Feb. 15, 1998 - London, England

Educated at the John Burroughs School in St. Louis and Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia, Gellhorn left school in 1927 before graduating in order to become a journalist. She published articles for the New Republic before travelling to France in 1930 to work for the United Press bureau in Paris as a foreign correspondent. Returning to America in 1932, she worked as a field investigator for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and worked tirelessly on reporting on the effects of the Great Depression. In 1936, she published The Trouble I've Seen, a collection of short stories concerning the Depression. In Christmas, 1936, Gellhorn met Ernest Hemingway and together they travelled to Spain to cover the Civil War. She and Hemingway eventually married in 1940. Gellhorn covered Nazi Germany, the conflict in Finland and later conflicts including the Far East and Europe. She was the only woman to land at Normandy on D-Day and later witnessed the atrocities of Dachau concentration camp. She and Hemingway began to drift apart and they divorced in 1945. She covered the Nuremberg trials following the war, before returning to America. She was hired by The Atlantic Monthly and continued to cover conflicts around the world including the Vietnam War, the Arab-Israeli conflicts and civil wars in Central America. She married T.S. Matthews and moved to London in 1954, which would be her home until she died. She continued to report and travel until well into her 80s. An operation for cataracts was unsuccessful and damaged her eyesight, leaving her nearly blind. This, coupled with ovarian cancer which had spread, led her to commit suicide. Her many works include What Mad Pursuit (1934), A Stricken Field (1940), The Undefeated (1945), The Wine of Astonishment (1948), Two By Two (1958), His Own Man (1961), Vietnam: A New Kind of War (1966), The Lowest Trees Have Tops (1967), Travels With Myself and Another (1978) and The View From the Ground (1988).
