Alfred Austin

Author Code: EAAU

Born: May 30, 1835 - Headingley, Leeds, England

Died: Jun. 2, 1913 - Ashford, Kent, England

Educated at Stonyhurst College, St. Mary's College, Oscott and the University of London, Austin graduated from the latter in 1853. After a time studying law, he became a barrister in 1857. He had published Randolph: A Poem in Two Cantos in 1855 and this had stoked his interest in literature and would eventually lead to his giving up his law career. He married in 1865 and the following year became the editor of the National Review, a position he would hold until 1896. During the 1870s he served as a foreign correspondent for The Standard. In 1896, Austin was appointed poet laureate, mostly due to his friendship with Lord Salisbury. Between 1871 and 1908, he published twenty volumes of verse, much of which was insignificant. His most popular work was The Garden That I Love a prose work which appeared in 1894. His autobiography was published in 1911. On the whole, Austin's work is considered mediocre. His works include Five Years of It (1858), The Human Tragedy (1862), An Artist's Proof (1864), Won By a Head (1866), Interludes (1872), Savonarola: A Tragedy (1881), Love's Widowhood and Other Poems (1889), England's Darling (1896), Haunts of Ancient Peace (1902), Sacred and Profane Love and Other Poems (1908) and The Bridling of Pegasus (1910).
