Lyman Abbott

Author Code: ALYA

Born: Dec. 18, 1835 - Roxbury, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Oce. 22, 1922 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at New York University where he graduated in 1853, Abbott then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1856. He later abandoned the law in order to study theology and, in 1860, was ordained a minister of the Congregational Church in Indiana. In 1865, he became a pastor of the New England Church in New York City and was appointed secretary of the American Union Commission. Having an avid interest in literature, Abbott resigned his position in 1869 in order to devote his time to writing. He became an associate editor of Harper's Magazine and later founded the Illustrated Christian Weekly. From 1876 to 1881 he co-edited The Christian Union with Henry Ward Beecher. Abbott became the editor-in-chief of The Christian Union, which later became The Outlook, in 1893. During the First World War, Abbott was a staunch supporter of the government and his opinions formed the central theme of The Outlook during the war years. His many works include Jesus of Nazareth (1869), Laicus (1872), A Study in Human Nature (1885), Life of Christ (1894), Problems of Life (1900), Industrial Problems (1905), The Home Builder (1908), The Spirit of Democracy (1910), Reminiscences (1915) and What Christianity Means to Me.
